Minutes

December 11, 2019

Time: 6:00pm

In Attendance

Michael LaBounty, Principal Curtis Jensen, Margaret Hess, Alishia Huefner, Angela Ross, Sonja Delaney, James LaBounty, Chris LaBounty

Approval of Minutes

A motion to approve the minutes from the October 9, 2019, meeting was made by Michael LaBounty. The motion was seconded by Curtis Jensen. Minutes were unanimously approved.

Principal Update

The student body officers had the opportunity to report to the school board on the programs they are supporting for a positive school culture. The programs they chose include angel tree for Christmas, breakfast club and village kids. They also want to work toward having the Wapiti store open during breakfast club so kids have more opportunities to turn in tickets for rewards.

TSSA and Land Trust

New teachers are benefiting from the instructional coaching.

Standard based grading is becoming best practices across the country and teachers are working toward implementing the 4 point scale grading. Standard based grading represents mastery education where students can be evaluated to show a level of mastery before moving on to subsequent information. Without “mastery” the student is given additional support to attain the level needed to move on. One resource for teachers has been Marzano Standard Based Grading – Professional Learning Communities that Work.

SNAP Plan

The SNAP Plan dated 2/12/19 was circulated. The main concerns were discussed; those being not enough light at 9800 South and Elk View Drive, multiple commercial entrances along the walking path of River Heights Drive, and the upcoming UDOT work on 104th and Bangerter.

The improvements made in the Elk Ridge’s parking lot with the sidewalk and more controlled driving paths seem to be making things safer at the school.

Counseling Center

8th grade PCCR’s – the assigned times to meet with students and their parents seem to be working well. It has gone back and forth from groups at night to individuals appointments.
7th grade Career day – need about 90 total volunteers to come in and describe what they do for their jobs; they will present 3 times
8th grade Job Shadow – students will be excused when they complete information about what they did during the day
9th grade JATC assembly and CTSO Workshops – hoping to get longer sessions with potential hands-on experiences

Next Meeting

February 19, 2020, at 6:00 p.m.
Was rescheduled to February 26, because of scheduling with something at the middle school.

Motion to adjourn was made by Michael LaBounty, seconded by Sonja Delaney, and unanimously approved.

Angela Ross, Kimberly Wimmer, James LaBounty, Principal Cutis Jensen

Approval of Minutes

A motion to approve the minutes from the April 24, 2019, meeting was made by Margaret Hess. The motion was seconded by Michael LaBounty. Minutes were unanimously approved.

Welcome and Introduction of new Principal

Curtis Jensen is a former assistant principal at Oquirrh Hills Middle School. He moved here from Idaho. His wife is a nurse.

Land Trust and Teacher Student Access Act (TSSA)

The legislature has approved new funding for schools to go towards instructional coaching. New model gives schools a report card, with goal to increase 1 point in tested subjects. Plans developed by schools, and plan was submitted last week for approval. Once approved, funds will be made available. Funds are in addition to current School LAND Trust funds.

Goals of the plan are to use a majority of the money to support teachers becoming endorsed at instructional coaching and paying for subs during training. In addition to credentials, specialty coaching and digital learning will be available to teachers. A small portion of funds would go to school initiatives helping support systems of students.

Principal Update

School moving toward standards-based grading, with teachers establishing which objectives should be taught. Proficiency scales will be based on a 1-4 scale, with 1 being below basic understanding of objective and 4 being advanced mastery of an objective. Focus to be on content not grade, but conversion of scale to grades being established. Language Arts is currently using. Ft. Herriman Middle School has sample proficiency skills.

Other school initiatives promoting a positive school culture include:

  • Breakfast club – students are called by random selection down for Chick-fil-a breakfast to give feedback, ideas, teacher shout outs, safety concerns, etc.
  • Village Kids – students referred by parent, teacher or friend to be watched over by team of teachers and counselors. A 0-3 rating given to each situation to help monitor amount of attention/check-in desired for each student.

Counseling Center

Suicide prevention presentations have started. Career focus is beginning, with November 20 being career day for 7th graders, and job shadow for 8th graders. January 30 will be when 9th graders learn about resumes and job interviews instead of Biz Town. PCCR’s will begin for 8th graders, which will be individual meetings being set up with parents instead of group meetings like last year.

Election of Co-Chair & Secretary

Jenn Zollinger will be unable to act as secretary for the 2019 -20 school year. A motion to elect Margaret Hess as co-chair and Angela Ross as secretary was made by *, seconded by *, and unanimously approved.
