SCC Minutes

May 10, 2022

Meeting Started at 5:05 pm

Members in Attendance: Principal Jenson, School Counselor Mr. Bennett, Shannon Bird, Mindi Allen, Marianne Dwyer, and Kelly Adams

Approving Minutes from last meeting: Marianne first, Shannon second for approval

Land Trust Plan Approval:

Most of the money goes to Instructional Coaching for the teachers.

Also, TSI (Targeted School Improvement), money spent on sub groups that don’t do well on testing to help them improve.

TSSA Approval:

Most of this money is spent on Chromebooks.  Some money is spent on the school store, and a few gaming computers for a new gaming club.

We discussed the Bangerter intersection update.  They will be taking the highway under the intersection, and building a new bridge for students crossing.  Main construction will begin Spring 2023.  The main concern is that the bridge will not be ripped out until the end of the school year, and hopefully rebuilt before the next year starts.

There will no longer be free lunch next year.

Counselor Bennett: Update from the counseling department.  9th graders just finished their trip to Bingham to see the CTE programs.  They have their mock interviews and resumes coming up on May 26.

7th graders have PCCR’s coming up.  Parents are invited.  Will held May 20 or 27th in the CCA class.

AP testing currently underway.

Kelly Adams will continue to be our president next year.

Email correspondence due to scheduling conflicts for this meeting:

I apologize for the scheduling conflicts we’ve had with the republican and democratic caucus nights, concerts, etc. We need to review and vote on our community council plan in order to submit it to the district/state on March 25th.
I propose we do two things:

  1. I’ll summarize our land trust plan and TSSA plan below and we can hold a remote vote
  2. We find a time to meet in the next few weeks to answer any questions and cover other related issues (safe walking routes plan, etc.)

The main thing here is that I need you to vote on the plan. I’ll send out the signature form to your email through the land trust site. Watch for that and add your signature if you agree with the plan. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to email me or call me or reply all to this email and we can answer your questions.

Summary of Land Trust & TSSA Plans

We get around $140,000 each year in our Land Trust budget. As a refresher, Land Trust funds are basically money the state makes on land it owns that gets funneled out to schools. Historically, we have allotted that entire amount to our instructional coaching program. We started this before the district adopted coaching as a district initiative and our coaching model has been largely what is being implemented throughout the district now that the success of such programs is catching on.

What does that actually look like? In our school, the land trust funds allow us to have essentially two instructional coaches available every period. This is a mix of two part-time coaches that make a full FTE (full-time equivalent, or person) and then seven teachers that coach on their prep (we buy out their prep and they prep on their own time).
Those coaches use that time to meet with teachers, observe classes, set goals, gather and analyze data, etc. They also help to implement school-wide initiatives. An example of this during the past year, coaches helped all teachers record a lesson, reflect on the lesson through various lenses, and make changes accordingly.

TSSA is a different animal. This fund is about the same amount each year as land trust, and is to be centered on three areas: instructional coaching (which we cover through land trust), professional development, and school needs. That last category is where most of our funds get spent each year, with the largest chunk going to purchasing enough chromebooks to keep every kid with a chromebook. Chromebooks last about five years, and we have to purchase between 300-600 chromebooks a year depending on the year to keep them running.

What Now?

That’s really the basics. I’ve attached the official plans for you to look at, and please email or call me if you have any questions. I’ll send the signature invitation out today as well, so if you approve of the plan, please follow the link and add your signature.

Also, please let me know if there are any Tuesdays at 6 pm in the next few weeks that you CAN’T make work for a meeting and we’ll see if there is one where all or most of you can make it.

Members in Attendance: Principal Jenson, School Counselor Mr. Bennett, Shannon Bird, Mindi Allen, Marianne Dwyer, and Rachel Ferre

The council approved the minutes from last month.

-Land Trust: Right now the school uses the money to provide coaches to the teachers.  They do goal setting, and provide feedback and support to the teachers.  Teachers are recording and watching their own lessons with guidance from the coaches.  Land trust also pays for Professional Development.  The committee was asked to think about items they would like to see this money used for and bring ideas to the next meeting.

-TSSA: This money also covers some instructional coaching, professional development, and also needs of the school.  This could be Chromebooks, instructional aides, things for the school store, wapiti currency, ect.

-Safe Walking Routes: We discussed the current plans and timeline of Bangerter Highway.  10400 S will be finished this winter.  They are currently doing an environmental study for 9800 S, and will have a public meeting for the final plan next winter.  Construction will not start until spring of 2023.

-Other concerns are 10400 S and River Heights Drive.  They would really like a crossing guard there, but last it was reviewed they said there was not enough student traffic.

-Counseling Center Update by Mr. Bennet: A needs assessment will be shortly coming out and they would like to see better participation from parents.  It helps the counseling center make goals based on the answers, and create programs for teachers, and counseling for kids. Asked the committee to help spread the word about the survey when it comes out next month.

Counselors are starting counseling groups for stress management, grief loss, anxiety…

Meeting adjourned at 7:07-Next meetings: Feb. 22, April 12

September 21, 2021 Minutes

Members in Attendance: Principal Jenson, School Counselor Mr. Bennett, District Office Administrator of Schools Cody Curtis, Shannon Bird, Mindi Allen, Marianne Dwyer, Kelly Adams, Rachel Ferre

Kelly Adams volunteered to be our Council Chair. Marianne Dwyer second the motion.

Principal Jenson gave us a quick overview of the purpose of the School Community Council.

We discussed what has historically been done with the Trust Lands Money. The school usually pays for instructional coaches. There are two part time coaches: Patricia Bronson, and Johnathon Laws that work with the teachers to improve teaching. They also pay teachers to coach during their instructional period.

The Teacher and Student Success Act also gives money to the school. Elk Ridge uses that money in a wide variety of ways. The school now has a one to one chrome book to student ratio. It also pays for professional development, school climate issues, and items for the school store.

Mr. Bennett gave us a report on what is coming up for the students from the counselors. Next month they will be going into math classes and teaching suicide awareness and prevention strategies. The parents in the meeting expressed the desire to also be sent the presentations so they can further the conversations at home and know what is being discussed. We also expressed interest in the lessons students are given on every other Wednesday during the DEAR time. Power points or lesson plans to be sent home. November 9th will be career day. Seventh graders will be discussing career and college prep during their CTE classes. In eighth grade they will be job shadowing. The ninth
graders will be doing mock resumes and interviews.

Last Cody Curtis showed us a slide show put together by the district about the proposed changes to the district dress code. They are presenting to all school community councils, discussing again and then will be presenting the information at a public board meeting for input from the community. It is focused on being gender and culturally neutral, and “when” what the student is wearing becomes a disruption to other student learning.
